Security adviceElectrostatic discharge (ESD):
Wear ESD wristbands when working with internal components and ensure that the devices are properly earthed to prevent damage from static electricity.
Temperature protection and ventilation:
Keep flammable materials away from the server. Install suitable smoke detectors and fire-fighting systems near the server room. Ensure sufficient airflow. Do not block any ventilation slots to avoid overheating. Avoid placing the server in closed cabinets without ventilation. Keep the ambient temperature within the limits specified by the manufacturer.
Cable management:
Lay cables neatly to avoid tripping hazards and damage. Use cable management arms or clips to improve organisation.
Electrical safety:
Only use earthed sockets and tested mains cables and avoid overloading the circuits. Ensure that the mains cable is free from damage. Reduce the risk of short circuits by disconnecting the power sources before carrying out maintenance work. For models with a redundant power supply, disconnect all power cables before carrying out maintenance work to minimise electrical hazards.
Cleaning and maintenance:
For devices with multiple power supply units, all power sources must be disconnected before working on the device in order to completely deactivate the power supply. Never work on a server that is switched on. Ensure that all components have cooled down completely before touching or replacing them. Clean the ventilation openings and regularly check the hardware for dust and loose connections to ensure optimum performance and service life.
Assembly and disassembly:
Place the server in a stable, well-ventilated rack or on a suitable flat surface that can support the weight. Avoid locations with vibrations or inclinations to prevent tipping. Ensure that the mounting surface can support the weight of the server. Heavy components should be mounted at the bottom of the rack to ensure balance. Install only one device at a time to avoid instability.
Access protection:
The server should be installed in a secure area that is only accessible to authorised persons. Use racks with locks, shields or other physical security measures.
Battery safety:
If the server uses an internal battery (e.g. CMOS battery), only replace it with a compatible type. Dispose of old batteries in accordance with local regulations.
Transport and storage:
Transport the servers safely and use suitable packaging. Remove all external cables and secure moving parts before transport. Avoid violent movements that could lead to internal damage.
