#1: KVM switch
What is a KVM switch? A KVM switch is a network hardware device that allows multiple computer systems to be controlled using just a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. This eliminates the need to provide a separate set of input devices for each computer – or even to set them up multiple times – saving time, space and hassle. You can switch conveniently between the connected systems at the touch of a button, using a keyboard shortcut or via automatic switching. The result: less cable clutter, lower costs and significantly more efficient management. KVM switches are therefore primarily used in server rooms, test environments and wherever multiple systems need to be managed in parallel.
#2: Kernel
What is a kernel? The kernel is the heart of an operating system – in other words, the central part of the programme that communicates directly with the hardware. It ensures that the processor, RAM, hard drives and other devices work together efficiently and that the software can access them. You can think of the kernel as a translator between the hardware and applications: when you start a programme, the kernel forwards the commands to the correct components whilst managing resources such as memory and processes. If the kernel did not exist, you could switch on a computer – but you would not be able to run any programmes. It is the ‘control centre’ that connects everything together.

#3: Cryptocurrency
What is a cryptocurrency? A cryptocurrency is a digital form of money based on encrypted data and decentralised technology. Unlike the euro or the dollar, it is not issued by a bank or government, but is managed via a network of computers. It is based on what is known as the blockchain – a public, tamper-proof ledger in which every transaction is permanently stored and can be verified by all participants. (Quick side note: In the ‘OneCoin fraud scandal’, there was in fact no real blockchain – the supposed cryptocurrency had no real-world value, and transactions could not be traced.) Well-known examples of – genuine – cryptocurrencies include Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. Depending on the system, they can be used to make online payments, transfer value or even execute contracts automatically.
#4: Artificial Intelligence
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Artificial Intelligence refers to systems or programmes that perform tasks that would normally require human thought. These include, for example, recognition, learning, decision-making and problem-solving. AI analyses large amounts of data in a very short time, recognises patterns and draws conclusions independently. This can be very practical – for example, in the automatic sorting of images, speech recognition or the optimisation of server workloads. A distinction is made not only between ‘weak’ AI, which is designed for specific tasks such as chatbots or recommendation systems, and ‘strong’ AI (which could theoretically think and act like a human), but also between deep learning and machine learning. In the AI subfield of ‘machine learning’, systems learn from data without being explicitly programmed, whilst ‘deep learning’ uses artificial neural networks to recognise complex patterns. #5: Cable management
What is cable management?Cable management encompasses all measures taken to ensure that cables are routed neatly, safely and in an orderly fashion – whether in a server cabinet, at a workstation or in larger IT environments. The aim is to organise cables so that they are easily accessible, out of the way and, at the same time, well protected. In practice, this can be quite tricky: Cables must not be crushed or twisted, and loose wires must be avoided. Proper cable management ensures that troubleshooting and maintenance are carried out more quickly and that airflow and cooling in the rack are not obstructed. Typical tools include cable ducts, Velcro strips, cable ties, cable guides, patch panel management or colour-coded markings.
#6: KRITIS
What does KRITIS mean? The term KRITIS stands for ‘critical infrastructure’ – that is, systems, organisations and facilities that are essential to the functioning of our society. These include sectors such as energy supply, water supply, healthcare, transport, finance, telecommunications and IT services. If these structures fail or are attacked, this can have serious consequences – ranging from production stoppages to threats to public safety. For this reason, KRITIS operators are subject to specific security and reporting obligations. The aim is to protect the systems in these critical sectors through technical, organisational and legal measures so that they continue to function even in the event of a crisis.
#7: Console server
What is a console server? A console server is a device that provides centralised access to the console ports of multiple network devices or server systems – in other words, to the interfaces through which systems can be administered directly. It is primarily used in data centres and larger IT environments to access routers, switches, firewalls or servers even when the network itself is down. This allows an administrator to access the devices remotely via the console server, change configurations or troubleshoot issues – even in the event of a network failure.
#8: Compatibility
What does compatibility mean? Compatibility describes how well (or whether) different hardware or software components work together. In IT, this means that devices, systems or programmes work together seamlessly, without causing errors or limitations. For example: if a server motherboard and a processor use the same socket type, they are compatible. Or if a piece of software runs on multiple operating systems, this is referred to as cross-platform compatibility. High compatibility is particularly important for upgrades, repairs or expansions – it saves time and money and prevents unnecessary downtime. For this reason, components are often standardised and tested to ensure they work with common systems.

#9: Indicator lights
What are indicator lights? Indicator lights – also known as status or signal lights – are small indicators that show the status of a device or component at a glance. They can be found everywhere in IT: on servers, hard drives, power supplies, switches or PCs. Depending on their colour and flashing pattern, they indicate whether a device is active, in operation, faulty or switched off. Typical meanings are:
- Green: everything is running normally
- Yellow/Orange: warning or activity (e.g. data access)
- Red: error or failure
- Blue: special operating modes (e.g. maintenance or identification in the rack)
In modern data centres, indicator lights are indispensable – they enable a quick visual diagnosis without having to check each device individually.
#10: Conference system
What is a conference system? A conference system is a technical solution that enables communication and collaboration across distances. Whether in meeting rooms, hybrid meetings or virtual conferences, for individuals or entire teams, it combines audio, video and data transmission into a single integrated system, allowing participants to hear and see one another and work on content together. Typical components include:
- Microphones and speakers – for clear voice transmission
- Cameras – for high-quality video conferencing
- Control and presentation units
- Network and cloud connectivity – for location-independent participation
In modern IT environments, conference systems are often integrated with platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Webex and support features such as screen sharing, whiteboards or automatic meeting minutes.
