• 🌐 Internet of superlatives: Japan breaks speed record
  Japanese researchers have set a new world record for internet speed: They transmitted data at 1.02 petabits per second over a distance of around 1,800 kilometres. This equates to around 127,500 gigabytes per second - theoretically enough to download the entire Netflix library in less than a second. This was made possible by a newly developed fibre optic cable with 19 data cores, which is just as thin as conventional cables despite its high performance. The technology uses uniform light conduction and multiple amplified signals to minimise data loss over long distances. What is particularly exciting is that the new cables can be integrated into existing networks, which makes expansion easier. Although the record has not yet been independently confirmed, it is an impressive demonstration of how powerful future Internet infrastructures could be.

• 🖥️ Microsoft simplifies PC migration with new migration tool
  Microsoft is currently testing a new tool that makes it much easier to switch from an old Windows PC to a new one with Windows 11. The application enables the local transfer of files, settings and personalisation via a home network - without the need for cloud services such as OneDrive. Users pair both devices using a code and then select what they want to transfer. Apps, passwords and OneDrive content are not transferred; these must be synchronised separately. The tool works with Windows 10 or 11 as the source system and requires at least Windows 11 version 24H2 on the target device. The function is currently only available in the Insider programm, but will soon be rolled out more widely.

• 🛡️ Large-scale printer attacks: What to do now
  Security researchers have discovered critical vulnerabilities in over 700 printer models, including devices from Brother, Toshiba, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta and Ricoh. Hackers are now actively exploiting these loopholes to gain access via the Internet - for example by reading the serial number, which can be used to derive the default admin password. In this way, printers can be integrated into botnets unnoticed and misused for further attacks. Models with the vulnerabilities CVE-2024-51977 and CVE-2024-51978 are particularly affected and can be easily exploited in combination. Users should urgently update the firmware and change the default password to protect their devices. Manufacturers have already released corresponding patches.

• 🧠 Windows Recall: AI search function launches in Europe with data protection upgrade
  Microsoft is now officially bringing its controversial AI search Recall to Europe - adapted to the strict requirements of the Digital Markets Act. The function takes screenshots of the screen every few seconds, analyses them locally using machine learning and makes content searchable. This allows users to quickly find past activities, such as documents or websites. The EU version allows snapshots to be exported for the first time so that they can be shared with third-party programmes. At the same time, all data remains stored locally - sensitive information such as passwords or credit card details are automatically filtered out. Recall is optional and must be activated manually; it is only available on Copilot+ PCs with the July update KB5062660. Some providers such as Brave and Signal block the function by default for data protection reasons.

• 🕵️️ Targeted cyberattacks on Microsoft servers: Chinese hackers in focus
  On 17 July 2025, security experts from ESET registered an attack on Microsoft SharePoint servers in Germany for the first time - the start of a global campaign. The attackers, including suspected state-backed hacker groups from China, exploited several zero-day vulnerabilities to infiltrate deep into company networks. Locally operated SharePoint servers of versions 2016, 2019 and Subscription Edition are particularly affected; the cloud version was spared. The attacks are carried out via so-called webshells, which can be used to execute arbitrary commands on compromised servers. Particularly explosive: the hackers even bypass two-factor authentication and single sign-on in order to spread further into the network via Microsoft services such as Outlook or Teams. Microsoft and security experts urgently recommend installing all available security updates, monitoring suspicious processes and sensitising employees to phishing.

• 🎭 Fake productivity tools: SMEs targeted by cybercriminals
  According to Kaspersky, around 8,500 employees of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) fell victim to malware masquerading as popular tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Teams or Zoom between January and April 2025. The number of attacks under the guise of ChatGPT rose particularly sharply by 115 per cent, while the number of attacks using Teams doubled. The attackers use fake installation files and phishing emails to spread downloaders, Trojans and adware. Popular Office programmes such as Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel were also frequently imitated. The choice of fake tools depends directly on public hype - the more popular a service, the more likely it is to be used as bait. Kaspersky recommends clear IT guidelines, regular backups and increased vigilance against suspicious offers and links.

30 years
On 24 August 1995, Microsoft released Windows 95 - an operating system that revolutionised the PC world. With over 7 million copies sold in the first 7 weeks and more than 40 million in the first year, it became a worldwide hit. Who remembers the legendary Start menu, the soundtrack ‘Start Me Up’ by the Rolling Stones - or how the whole world was suddenly talking about ‘Plug and Play’? 😄

In addition to technical innovations such as the introduction of a taskbar, desktop and start menu, a 32-bit architecture with pre-emptive multitasking and long file names (over 8 characters for the first time), the first steps were also taken towards Internet access.

Fun fact: Although official support ended in 2001, the system lives on - albeit rarely - as an icon. Classics such as Doom, Pinnball and Office 95 are also being revived in retro emulations and nostalgic projects. According to a t3n article from July 2025, Windows 95 is actually still used in individual ATMs and industrial plants - partly because many machines run special software that only runs under Win95.

Tips of the week

• 🛡️ Security check for your network devices
  After the printer attacks of the last few weeks, it is worth taking a look at your firmware versions - also update routers and switches regularly and adjust admin passwords.
  
  
• 🔄 Update passwords regularly
  Even if the BSI no longer recommends a general change interval, the following still applies: you should change your passwords regularly. Immediately, of course, if you notice data leaks or suspicious activity - and if you are still using passwords multiple times. You can find out more about this in one of our blog posts.
