• BSI warns: Almost 7,000 firewalls in Germany at acute risk
  The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is sounding the alarm: Ongoing attacks on outdated Watchguard Firebox firewalls are currently threatening around 6,978 systems in Germany. The cause is a known vulnerability (CVE-2025-9242) that has been actively exploited since mid-September. Firewalls with activated VPN functions that have not yet been patched are particularly affected. The BSI urges operators to install updates and deactivate VPN accesses that are no longer needed.

• eBay switches to credit system – sellers must take action
  From 5 November 2025, eBay will change its payment rules for private sellers: sales proceeds will no longer be automatically transferred to the bank account, but will initially remain as ‘eBay credit’ on the platform account. This credit can be used for purchases, shipping labels or advertisements. Those who prefer to receive their money directly must initiate the payout manually in the customer area or set up a transfer interval (daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly). According to eBay, the goal is to give sellers more control and flexibility.

• According to an insider report, Amazon is planning massive job cuts through robots
  Internal documents, which are believed to be in the possession of the New York Times, point to a far-reaching automation strategy at Amazon: by 2033, around 600,000 jobs in the US are to be replaced by robots – primarily in logistics and warehousing. The aim is to save up to 12.6 billion US dollars in costs. As many as 160,000 jobs could be lost by 2027. Amazon denies the allegations and emphasises that the documents do not represent an official strategy. Critics warn that this could send a signal to the entire labour market.

• Australia: Social media ban for under-16s from December
  From 10 December 2025, TikTok, Meta and Snap will have to exclude children under the age of 16 from their platforms in Australia – this is required by a new youth protection law. The providers criticise the measure as ineffective, but intend to implement it technically. TikTok warns that the ban could push children into unregulated areas of the internet. According to the text of the law, Snap even considers itself exempt. The government wants to use this step to curb risks such as cyberbullying and addictive behaviour – despite doubts about its practical feasibility.

• Hamburg: Referendum for faster climate neutrality
  In the referendum on 12 October 2025, around 53 per cent of Hamburg voters voted in favour of faster implementation of climate targets. The ‘Climate Neutral by 2040’ initiative calls for Hamburg to become climate neutral by 2040 instead of 2045. The Senate is legally obliged to implement the result – the new climate protection law will come into force within a month. Critics complain about high costs and a lack of measures, while supporters see it as a strong signal for municipal climate protection.

• IKEA gives away mini beds for smartphones – to combat sleep deprivation
  With its new Phone Sleep Collection, IKEA wants to combat night-time ‘doomscrolling’: the first product is a miniature bed for smartphones, equipped with an NFC chip and app connection. The aim is to consciously ‘put your phone to bed’ in the evening – anyone who refrains from scrolling at night for seven nights will receive an IKEA voucher worth approximately £20. Currently, the bed is only being given away in the United Arab Emirates – after a purchase of £175 or more. An EU launch is not planned at this time.

Number of the month: 116 TWh:
According to a report by the Federal Network Agency, estimates suggest that the electricity consumption of data centres will increase to between 78 TWh and 116 TWh by 2037. This would mean that data centres could account for up to 10% of Germany's total electricity consumption in the future – a threefold increase compared to today. Energy demand is growing rapidly, particularly due to the boom in AI applications and cloud services. Without additional capacity from renewable sources, digital infrastructure threatens to become a climate risk.

  Phishing emails, hacked accounts and infected download links: extreme caution is also required during the Halloween period. Read our blog posts on social engineering and hacker tricks during the holidays. And: always keep your software up to date.
