• Digital border system: Germany launches EES
  From 12 October 2025, Germany will replace traditional passport stamps with the new EU-wide Entry-Exit System (EES). The system is aimed at third-country nationals and, in addition to travel documents, also records biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints. The aim is to make border controls more efficient and improve security. The system will be introduced in stages, starting at Düsseldorf Airport, followed by Frankfurt and Munich. The system is expected to be operational nationwide by April 2026. Travellers must be prepared for additional steps when entering the country, such as the one-time collection of biometric data.

• Windows 10: Support ends in 30 days
  Microsoft reminds users that support for Windows 10 version 22H2 will finally expire on 14 October 2025 – including all editions such as Home, Pro, Enterprise and Education. After that, there will be no more security updates. Those who want to remain protected can obtain extended support for one year through the ESU programme – either free of charge via Microsoft Rewards or for a fee of approximately £30. Alternatively, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 or switching to Linux/macOS.

• Phishing wave hits PayPal & Spotify users
  A new scam is targeting PayPal and Spotify customers. Following a security breach at PayPal – in which the login details of 15.8 million accounts appeared online – criminals are exploiting the situation for phishing calls and fake emails. Spotify users are also affected: following the price increase, emails with the subject line ‘Update payment’ are circulating, prompting users to enter sensitive data on fake websites. Typical characteristics: impersonal salutation, pressure through deadlines and fake buttons. Consumer protection agencies advise: delete emails immediately or report them as spam.

• IT job market: decline with exceptions
  According to ZDNet, the IT job market has been shrinking for three years – over 179,000 jobs have been lost in the last 24 months alone. Traditional developer roles, which are increasingly being automated by AI, are particularly affected. Nevertheless, there are opportunities: over 200,000 IT vacancies still exist, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. Skills in AI, data engineering, platform security and business expertise are in demand. Those who think creatively, understand systems and use AI sensibly will remain in demand – even in times of upheaval.

According to recent reports, 15.8 million PayPal login details have appeared online – the result of a security breach that triggered a massive wave of phishing attacks.

Tips of the week

• Change your passwords regularlyThere has been a recent surge in phishing and cybercrime. It is best to change your passwords regularly and remember: one password per account. If one account is hacked, the thief could, in the worst case, gain access to several accounts. We have summarised how to generate secure passwords in one of our previous blog posts.
  
  
• Upgrade to Windows 11
  Long announced, the time is almost here: support for Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025. After that, there will be no more security updates, which means an increased risk if you continue to use Windows 10. PCs and notebooks that are used for online banking or other security-critical applications in particular should not simply continue to be used after the deadline. Private users have the option of extending security support until October 2026 (prerequisite: Windows 10 version 22H2 and the latest update KB5063709) . However, it would be better to upgrade to the new Windows. If your computer or laptop does not support this, it is worth upgrading your hardware at the same time – you know where to get cheap PCs and affordable business laptops 😉.
  
  
• Stay critical and raise awareness among others
  From the ‘grandchild scam’ on the telephone to CEO fraud emails at work to analogue phishing via deceptively genuine letters in the postbox – criminals' tricks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, their methods are wide-ranging and sometimes deceptively genuine. Nowadays, it pays to take a closer look and be critical of much of what lands in your analogue and digital mailboxes. Those who have had experience with this should raise awareness among others – so that fewer people fall for these attempts at fraud.
