Server virtualisation - Powerful rack servers as VMs bring many advantages

Simply because the respective servers sometimes have very different requirements in terms of configuration, it is not a good idea to run several different services on one device. This is also because - in the event of a hacker attack, outage or other malfunction or emergency in which a server ‘crashes’ - not just one application but several are paralysed. And this does not make recovery any less complicated. But if you need to make savings in terms of hardware and running costs and want to combine similar services, you can rely on server virtualisation - that's what today's blog post is all about.

Are virtual machines also worthwhile for SMEs?

Virtual servers are by no means just for large companies - SMEs can also reap many benefits from this technology. The common rule of ‘one server per service’ can be circumvented with VMs. As already mentioned, it is very tempting to install other applications on the racks that have a low utilisation rate. However, server consolidation should only be achieved through virtualisation. Although various functions and services can be provided via one platform (hardware-based server), they are still separated by the individually installed VMs (software-based server). The hardware basis is called the host, the virtual servers are called VMs or guests. Each individual VM also requires its own operating system - a kind of ‘intermediary’ is also required between the hardware and software, i.e. virtualisation software such as VMware or Hyper-V.

Hardware configuration when using virtual machines

When configuring the server, it is important to consider both sufficient RAM for the virtual machines and the fact that very powerful processors are usually advantageous for virtualisation. The required sizing can be determined by the ‘previous individual servers’ - for example, if you want to virtualise three servers that already require 32 GB of RAM per device, you won't get very far with a server that is to serve as a hardware platform and only has 64 GB of RAM.

If critical areas are brought together here, it is not enough for the system to be highly available and performant; it must be both redundant and fail-safe. A well thought-out backup solution and a plan for the worst-case scenario must also be in place. In addition, it is also necessary to separate the hard disk RAIDs on both the virtual and physical levels. In other words, what is done for the actual hardware - both in terms of performance and security - should also be done for the VMs.

However, anyone who takes this into account can benefit from the enormous advantages of virtual machines. On the one hand, of course, this concerns the reduced acquisition costs for the hardware and operation, as well as simplified administration (e.g. through a management programme) and less maintenance effort and costs. Existing resources can be utilised efficiently, the systems are optimally expandable and available - in addition, different operating systems can be used, for example. For example, Windows can run on one VM and a UNIX-based operating system on the other.
